ARC Review: What Goes Up

No comments :
Title: What Goes Up
Author: Katie Kennedy
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Publication Date: July 18, 2017
Source: Bloomsbury for Review Consideration

Action-packed and wildly funny, this near-future sci-fi features three teens on an inter-dimensional mission to save the world.

Rosa and Eddie are among hundreds of teens applying to NASA’s mysterious Multi-World Agency. After rounds of crazy-competitive testing they are appointed to Team 3, along with an alternate, just in case Eddie screws up (as everyone expects he will). What they don’t expect is that aliens will arrive from another dimension, and look just like us. And no one could even imagine that Team 3 would be the only hope of saving our world from their Earth-destroying plans. The teens steal the spacecraft (it would be great if they knew how to fly it) and head to Earth2, where the aliens’ world and people are just like ours. With a few notable exceptions.

There, the teens will find more than their alternate selves: they'll face existential questions and high-stakes adventure, with comedy that's out of this world.

Waiting on Wednesday (52)

No comments :

Waiting on Wednesday is a bookish meme created and hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine.

Each week, bloggers and readers share some of the upcoming titles that they are very eager to get their hands on.

It's pretty simple to participate in Waiting on Wednesday:

  • Create your own Waiting on Wednesday post that features an upcoming title (or titles) - I usually only go with one book a week because seeing all the titles can be a bit overwhelming for me.
  • Be sure to credit Jill somewhere in your post (see how I credited her above?)
  • Link up to the Linky on Jill's blog so that others can see your post

NO ONE READS THE FINE PRINT.

The good news is that the USA is finally out of debt. The bad news is that we were bought out by Valor National Bank, and debtors are the new big game, thanks to a tricky little clause hidden deep in the fine print of a credit card application. Now, after a swift and silent takeover that leaves 9-1-1 calls going through to Valor voice mail, they’re unleashing a wave of anarchy across the country.

Patsy didn’t have much of a choice. When the suits showed up at her house threatening to kill her mother then and there for outstanding debt unless Patsy agreed to be an indentured assassin, what was she supposed to do? Let her own mother die?

Patsy is forced to take on a five-day mission to complete a hit list of ten names. Each name on Patsy's list has only three choices: pay the debt on the spot, agree to work as a bounty hunter, or die. And Patsy has to kill them personally, or else her mom takes a bullet of her own.

Since yarn bombing is the only rebellion in Patsy's past, she’s horrified and overwhelmed, especially as she realizes that most of the ten people on her list aren't strangers. Things get even more complicated when a moment of mercy lands her with a sidekick: a hot rich kid named Wyatt whose brother is the last name on Patsy's list. The two share an intense chemistry even as every tick of the clock draws them closer to an impossible choice.

Delilah S. Dawson offers an absorbing, frightening glimpse at a reality just steps away from ours—a taut, suspenseful thriller that absolutely mesmerizes from start to finish.

Book Review: Fairest

10 comments :
22489107Title: Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles 3.5)
Series: The Lunar Chronicles
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Publication Date: January 27, 2015
Rating: ☆☆☆
In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of them all?

Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.

Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from Winter, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.

My Review

When I first started reading Fairest by Marissa Meyer, I was a little confused as to why it was being labeled as a bridge book or a midquel. Most of Levana's story takes place before the events in Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress. Though the novel definitely connects Queen Levana to all of the main characters in The Lunar Chronicles, I just don't see how it truly operates as a bridge book because it contains a lot of new information. Even after finishing the book, it felt more like a prequel instead of a bridge book. It could very well have been expanded and been a full length novel just like the other books in the series.

After binge-reading  Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress this past summer, I was excited to learn more about this scientifically thrilling world of Marissa Meyer's. I will admit that I was more looking forward to Winter, but I was also looking forward to Fairest. After finishing Fairest, I found myself a bit disappointed but not enough to make me dislike the book. I just wanted more. The plot in Fairest is set, but the world-building really isn't. I was hoping to learn more about Luna and its technological developments, but Meyer briefly mentions what readers will remember from the other books in the series. I was also hoping to get a better image of Luna in my mind, but what Meyer describes isn't quite fulfilling (but the art on the inside is!).

As you know, this is Levana's story, and it starts when she is fifteen. She finds herself in love and ready to marry this man. Unfortunately, things don't work out for Levana and her husband. You would think that this would harden Levana, but you'll discover that there's still more to Levana than just an unrequited love affair. I found that a lot of the details and connections were predictable, but it didn't make me dislike the book. It just solidified how well I know the stories.

Do I like Levana any more than I did in the previous three books? I'm not saying that I completely hated her in the other books because she's a much needed foil, but I don't think this book changed my opinion of her. At this point, Levana is meant to be an unlikeable character, but that's why I like her as a character. Because of this book, I do understand Levana's history a lot better, which is what I think Meyer was going for with this book.

Book Review: Atlantia by Ally Condie

2 comments :

Title: Atlantia
Author: Ally Condie
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Publication Date: October 28, 2014
Synopsis:
Can you hear Atlantia breathing?

For as long as she can remember, Rio has dreamt of the sand and sky Above—of life beyond her underwater city of Atlantia. But in a single moment, all her plans for the future are thwarted when her twin sister, Bay, makes an unexpected decision, stranding Rio Below. Alone, ripped away from the last person who knew Rio’s true self—and the powerful siren voice she has long hidden—she has nothing left to lose.

Guided by a dangerous and unlikely mentor, Rio formulates a plan that leads to increasingly treacherous questions about her mother’s death, her own destiny, and the complex system constructed to govern the divide between land and sea. Her life and her city depend on Rio to listen to the voices of the past and to speak long-hidden truths.

My Review:

Atlantia by Ally Condie is the story of two orphaned sisters, Rio and Bay, who live in an underwater city called Atlantia. They've spent their whole lives there, one dreaming of going above, and one wishing to stay below. It's also the story of lies and deception and a heroine will rise to save her world.

I really wanted to like this book, especially after reading the first few chapters from NetGalley. Unfortunately, I just feel like too many things went wrong for me to like it.

I'll admit that I like it a lot better than Condie's Matched trilogy, but once again, Condie's writing style is lackluster. When I was reading, especially at certain points in the novel, I felt like Condie was trying to write to little kids instead of the target teen audience. When I read, I want to feel like the author is really trying to say something. Most of the time that is done by including sentences of varying length. In Atlantia, there are way too many sentences of the same length in a row. It makes reading difficult, like someone is trying to beat you in the head to get you to understand what is going on.

The introductory chapters in Atlantia are indeed great at capturing a reader's attention, but the pace slowed soon after. It was almost as if all the life were sucked out of the book. Much of the middle of the book is boring. There were many times that I wanted to put it down. The book eventually picks up the speed and action again in the last third, but at this point, salvaging an enjoyable read was out of the question for me. It was a chore to read this book.

Condie does create an interesting world in Atlantia, but only for The Below. She describes the city well, and I was able to imagine much of it in my head. It's hard to say that her world building is superb when she fails to give The Above half of the detail that she gives The Below.

The characters in Atlantia were okay. Rio really didn't impress me; I feel like Condie could have explored her a little more or at least made her a bit more interesting. Rio's sister, Bay, is mentioned a lot in the book, but I felt like I barely knew her at all. Atlantia also features many supporting characters, and some of them are interesting and characterized well, but I didn't really enjoy reading about them.

I think at this point, it's safe for me to say that Ally Condie is not the writer for me. I don't know if I'll be reading anything else from her in the future after this proved to be a book that bored me for weeks.

Waiting on Wednesday (4)

7 comments :
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Breaking the Spine. On Wednesdays, we get to share a book (or two) that aren't released yet, but we can't wait to get our hands on them. Get it?

This is a leap of faith for me this week, but I'm curious about a certain book by a certain author who I didn't really enjoy the last time I read her books. I know this is probably going to end badly, and that I should just stop. I'm just a terribly curious person. Are you confused? It's okay because I'm still confused about actually wanting to try this book with the terrible reading behind me.

The book I'm waiting on is Atlantia by Ally Condie. For those of you who have read my review for the Matched trilogy, I assure you that I am not crazy! The synopsis actually makes this book seem interesting, so I am willing to give it a fair chance. I've also seen a decent amount of positive reviews from advance readers, so I think it's safe to say that I'll be picking this book up. And if I hate it, I can always sell it to Half Price Books.

Atlantia is due to hit shelves in bookstores on October 28, 2014.

I'll be sure to post a review of it. I really hope it's good. I really want to like Ally Condie.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Can you hear Atlantia breathing?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (3)

9 comments :
Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend! You know what Monday means, right? Another installment of "It's Monday!"

"It's Monday! What are You Reading" is a weekly meme created and hosted by BookJourney. On Mondays, you get to share the book or books that you are reading with everyone who reads your blog.

Even though I promised that I would start Scarlet last Monday, I kind of didn't. I got too busy, but that's okay because I'm reading it this Monday.

Scarlet is the second book in The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. I've been a little busy, so I'm slowly chipping away at it, but I really like it so far. I don't know of I like it as much as I liked Cinder yet, but I'll have to wait and see.

I'm still really glad that the Goodreads group I'm a co-mod for is going to be reading this series starting in September. I've wanted to read them for a while, and now that I've started, I just want them all. Can Fairest and Winter be released like now?

If you haven't read these books, I really think you should. I enjoyed Cinder, and I think anyone who likes fantasy and science fiction would enjoy them.

Synopsis:
Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison--even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive. Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

So what are you reading this Monday? Let me know in the comments or leave a link to your post, and I'll check it out.

My Review

I saw this a while ago on Goodreads, and I always meant to buy it simply because of the Cinderella retelling. I love a good retelling, and I am a sucker for anything that has to do with Cinderella. I kept seeing it at Target for the longest time, but I never took it home because I was afraid that I wouldn't like it because of the robots and androids. I was so wrong. I should have just taken it home with me on the first day I saw it in a store, but days passed, and then years passed before I finally bought in on Book Outlet.

I was taken in by this book from the very first page. Meyer has a way with words that can just suck a reader into a story. This might be a cliche, but I really felt like I was seeing everything in front of me as it was unfolding.

Cinder is an amazing retelling and an amazing story of its own. Obviously Cinder is the book's Cinderella. She was adopted when she was eleven by a man, and soon after, he dies, so she is stuck living with his wife and two daughters - the step family in the story. Then there is Prince Kai who is the Prince Charming of the tale. There are also some other important characters such as Dr. Eland and the Lunar queen, Queen Levana.

Oh, and if that's not enough, the Lunar princess is missing, and Prince Kai is searching for her so he can get out of an imminent marriage with Queen Levana.

I really liked the Princess Selene storyline in this book. Missing princess rumored to be alive? People are searching for her? She could bring hope to the country? It reminded me so much of what I learned about Anastasia when I was younger.

I'm truly glad that I finally read this book. It is amazing, and I'm sure that I'll be starting Scarlet tonight.
