Waiting on Wednesday (25)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Jill at her blog, Breaking the Spine. The meme helps blogger spotlight the upcoming releases that we are eagerly waiting on. Get it? I love participating in this meme because it allows me to share upcoming releases that I want to read in a more personal way.

Participating in the meme is a piece of cake! All you need to do is make a post about an upcoming release that you're waiting on, make sure you've linked back to Breaking the Spine, and then add your name to the link-up tool.

What I'm Waiting On...

Title: Dumplin'
Author: Julie Murphy
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Expected Publication: September 15, 2015
Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

Why I'm Waiting...

I'm not sure if many of my readers know this about me, but I'm also a self-proclaimed fat girl. I've battled with my weight for years, and certain health reasons make it so much harder to actually lose weight. I feel like YA lacks books about plus-size girls, so I am very excited to have the chance to read another one after having loved Kelsey Macke's Damsel Distressed. I can't wait to see how Julie Murphy portrays Willowdean, and I'm already one hundred percent positive that I'm going to love this one.

What Are You Waiting On...

  3. I've been excited for this one for so long. I didn't get an ARC, so waiting until September is going to be torture.

  5. Great choice! This one definitely sounds interesting and I agree YA needs more plus-size heroines. Have you read Side Effects May Vary? I really enjoyed Julie's characterizations. The characters weren't really likable but they were sympathetic. I'm expecting much of the same in this book.

  6. Okay, now I officially can't wait until September either! I've also read YA books about plus-size issues, and I've never found one that I could really relate to. I can't stand books where all of the plus-size girl's problems are solved because she loses x amount of weight.

  7. Right? As much as it's inspiring to see a book or even a movie about the plus size girl who loses the weight, it's so much more to see someone accept who they are, and that's what I'm so hoping this one will achieve.

It's funny... this one kind of reminds me of that Lifetime movie Beautiful Girl, which I adored!

  9. YA does need more plus-size heroines. They are diverse too, you know?

I did read Side Effects May Vary, and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit odd, but I loved how the characters were unlikeable because it made it real.

I may have to read this one! I've always seen YA books deal with weight in a way that makes it seem like the weight loss is the integral part of a character's journey, and they can only lead a better life when they're 20 pounds lighter. Honestly - that's just plain stupid! Plus, like you said, there are all sorts of health reasons why losing weight would be really hard for some people - I have some experience with that as well, and now that I HAVE lost a bit of weight, my body is like "WHAT'S GOING ON TIME TO FREAK OUT." All sorts of fun stuff. So when weight loss is presented as this magical, easy thing I just get a bit ticked off.

Anndddd I ranted there so I'll just be done now ;) Oh, and another book about weight loss that's coming up in the Fall is Future Perfect - that one looks like it might be really positive as well!

  11. No worries on the rant! I completely understand because sometimes it is so annoying to see that. Weight loss isn't a bad thing, but when pretty much every book with a plus-size character is about it, it gets old. I think that's why I liked Kelsey Macke's Damsel Distressed so much, and I'm hoping this one is just as good.
