The Friday 56 (21)

7 comments :
The Friday 56 is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Freda at Freda's Voice. The rules are super easy to follow, and this feature is a great way to share the books you're reading with other bloggers and readers. I've discovered so many great books through this meme, and I always have a blast trying to figure out what quote I like the most.

So what do you need to do to participate in The Friday 56?
  • Go to page 56 (or 56% for e-readers like Kindle and Nook) of the book you're currently reading
  • Grab a few sentences to share with your blog's readers, but be sure not to spoil anything too major from the book
  • Add your name and link to the link-up on Freda's blog
So... once again, I find myself reading another ARC on Friday. (I got curious last night, and I did the math. 57% of the books I've read this year have been ARCs. I love reading them, but I am going to make more time for back listed books too.)

Anyway... I'm really excited for this week's pick because the book showed up on my front porch months and months ago. I wanted to read it right away, but I guess it showed up when all my late spring books showed up, and you know me... I typically read them in publication order. Well... I skipped a few (for now) to get to this beauty because I couldn't wait any longer! It's my most anticipated release all year.

*The quote that follows does not reflect the final printing. I'm sharing a quote from an uncorrected proof that could very well be changed in the published version.*

"I used to hate it, all their macoin' - being nosy. But now I couldn't decide which was worse - having neighbors spy on me, counsel me like they knew the workings of my heart? Or having them look right through me?"
Now it's your turn! I'd love to know what books you're featuring on your blogs this week, so feel free to share the links to your Friday 56 posts! You know I love blog hopping, so leave a link, and I'll drop by.

Have a great weekend!

This week/weekend, I'm yet again reading a few books, and one of them is the upcoming YA thriller, The Last Good Day of the Year by Jessica Warman. It's the second book about a kidnapping that I've read this year. I'm not too far in, and the last page I actually read was page 56, which is a transcript of an interview.
Detective Wyatt: So did you see him drinking?
Helen Handley: It was New Year's. Everybody was drinking. But Stevie went to bed after dinner. He was in bed before the ball dropped.
DET: Why was he so tired, Helen?
HH: He's been under a lot of stress. He hasn't been on a good schedule lately.
DET: Why has he been under so much stress?
HH: You know why.
DET: I want to hear it from you.

This week, I'm featuring two books on my Friday 56 post. Why? Well I'm reading one for fun, and I'm reading another one for work. The books I'm reading this week are All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven and Night by Elie Wiesel in The Night Trilogy bind-up. It seems that I've set myself up for some very emotional reads this week.

The first excerpt is from Night by Elie Wiesel. This is my first time reading this book because I somehow ended up in the ninth grade class that didn't get to read it.
"Again, the waiting. I fell asleep standing up. I dreamed of a bed, of my mother's hand on my face. I woke: I was standing, my feet in the mud. Some people collapsed, sliding into the mud. Others shouted:
'Are you crazy? We were told to stand. Do you want to get us all in trouble?'"

The second excerpt I'm sharing this Friday is from Jennifer Niven's YA debut, All the Bright Places.
"I climb into my mom's old Saturn VUE, better known as Little Bastard, and head to Violet Markey's on the farm road that runs parallel to National Road, the main artery that cuts through town. I slam my foot against the gas pedal, and there's the rush as the speedometer climbs to sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, the needle shaking the higher it gets, the Saturn doing its best in that moment to be a sports car instead of a five-year-old minivan."

Now I want to know what everyone else is reading this week and weekend. Feel free to let me know the names of any books, but also feel free to leave your links to your Friday 56 posts. Happy reading, and I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend!

I just finished reading Kissing in America by Margo Rabb yesterday, but I enjoyed it so much that I had to include a quote from it in this week's Friday 56 post, and I'm sure you'll see why as soon as you read the excerpt I've chosen.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18478083-kissing-in-america?from_search=true&search_version=service
*This excerpt has been quoted from an uncorrected proof, so it may not reflect the final printing.*

"In our neighborhood in Queens, almost everybody's family was from another country - our local library had books in Korean, Spanish, Romanian, Chinese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, and Turkish. Even the Jews were from Israel or Yemen or Ethiopia, or their grandparents, like mine, were born in Europe."
What do you think of this excerpt? Will you be reading this book when it releases next month? Are you a fan of how diverse it appears from this quote? Let me know in the comments.

Also, feel free to leave links to your Friday 56 posts. I'd love to see what everyone's been reading and enjoying this week!

This week, I'm reading a book that's been on my TBR list for a very, very long time. I was so excited when I found it at Half Price Books that I bumped it ahead of quite a few of the books that I already own. So... what book is it? Well, it's Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson.

"I turned my lights on and my music up, a Luke Bryan album I'd downloaded last month but not listened to until now, and headed in the direction of the Orchard. I was halfway through the album when I turned off the main road and on to the side street that would lead me there. Out here, the houses got farther and farther apart until there was nothing but empty land and, tucked away on an almost-hidden drive, the Orchard."
What do you think? This is my first experience with Morgan Matson, and I must say that I'm enjoying her writing so far. It's easy-going, but full of imagery.

I know this book has been out for a while, and I'm sure many of you have already read it. If so, what did you think of it? Feel free to let me know, and feel free to leave links to your Friday 56 posts. I'd love to see what everyone is reading!

Currently ReadingThis week, I'm reading Emery Lord's highly anticipated sophomore novel, The Start of Me and You.  I can tell you that it is fabulous so far, and I am fairly positive that I am going to love this book. If you haven't already, pre-order this to make sure you can start reading it on March 31!

"That looks good," Tessa told me when I emerged from the closet. She leaned back on a pile of pillows on her bed, crossing her arms. "I thought you didn't like that dress."

"I like it. My mom just wouldn't let me wear it that one time."

"That is cute," Tessa cried, gesturing at the dress. "Why doesn't your mom like it?"

"Too skimpy," I said, making air quotes.

What do you think? Have you already read The Start of Me and You? Are you dying on the inside because you need to read it now?

As always, feel free to leave links to your Friday 56 posts so I can check them out, and see what everyone's reading. Enjoy your weekend!

This week, I'm reading Fairest by Marissa Meyer. It's a companion book in The Lunar Chronicles series, and gives readers the backstory to Queen Levana. I'm sure many of you remember how I fell in love with these books this past summer, so it's only fair that Queen Levana gets to take over my blog for a little while.

"A young woman stepped out of the line of thaumaturges, dressed in a maroon-red coat, with glossy raven's-wing hair falling down her back. She was beautiful in the way that all members of the queen's entourage were beautiful, but there was also something admirable in the way she held herself. A confidence that glimmered. Though her station was beneath the head thaumaturge, her posture and faint smile seemed to indicate that she didn't much believe herself to be beneath anyone at all."
I'm sure all of you Lunartics know exactly who Meyer is describing in this scene from Fairest.

But if you haven't read these books... what are you waiting for? This is such an awesome connection to the books! Seriously... Go read them now! They are among some of my favorite books, and I highly recommend them to everyone!

This Friday, I'm reading Everything That Makes You by Moriah McStay. It's about a girl named Fiona, and she has two different stories to tell - what really happens in her life and what could have happened if she hadn't been in an accident.

Everything That Makes You will be published on March 17, 2015, so look out for a review from me soon!

"At this point, Fiona couldn't stand it. Her future teetered in the balance of these next few moments. Her brother might get a girlfriend -- she'd not spent much time thinking about this, and she didn't like the idea of it at all. But much, much worse -- she might have to play and sing her songs in front of people."

This week, I'm reading My Best Everything by Sarah Tomp. The book releases on Tuesday, so look for a review between now and then.

It's about a bright teenager who is getting ready to leave her small town life for good. Unfortunately, her dad loses all of her tuition money, so it looks like she'll be stuck in Dale, Virgina for a little longer. Then she cooks up a plan to make and sell moonshine so she has her tuition money.

As of right now, I'm about 30% through the book, and I can tell you that I'm really liking it so far.

"We hadn't done much beyond kissing. Heated hours of kissing, but for someone measuring progress, there hadn't been any quantifiable change. All clothes stayed on. Curious hands had roamed the landscapes of each other, but there'd only been quick, furtive slips beneath to reach hot skin. The way I ached inside whenever you held me close felt like something so different than hard science."

Currently ReadingThis week, I've been reading an advance copy of The Tragic Age by Stephen Metcalfe that I won through the Goodreads First Read program. I'll be reviewing it as soon as I'm finished reading, which will probably be soon because I only have about one hundred pages left to finish. Keep your eyes peeled within the next week if you're curious to find out more about the book and what I thought of it.

The following is dialogue from one of the book's characters, Twom Twomey. He's pretty strange, but I like him so far.
"'Okay, dude, it's like this. My folks are messed up, okay? They're fucking derelicts. The only reason they stay together is because nobody else would have them. Living with relatives is pretty much all I do. Okay?'"

This week, I'm reading the upcoming book, Biggie, by Derek E. Sullivan. I'm reading it as part of a blog tour, so keep an eye out for a review early next month! I'm not too far into this book (and definitely nowhere near the 56% mark for this quote), but so far, it's pretty good. I'm looking forward to learning more about Biggie and the other characters in the book.
"You need to throw up," Killer says. "Do you know how to do that?"

I really don't, so I shake my head as a cop pulls into the driveway.

This week, I'm reading an ARC of Twisted Fate by Norah Olson that was kindly given to me by Sarah. The book has already been released, so you can read this one right now if you really want to read it.

"Becky tossed her cigarette on the ground and stubbed it out with her toe and then she put her arm around me and we started walking back in to our next class."
Okay... so it's not the greatest quote on the planet, quite a few things in this quote bother me. First of all, it's a run-on sentence, and the narrator of this chapter is supposedly really smart. It's kind of annoying if you ask me. Also, what's with the littering? Ewww. But that page of the book is the last page of the chapter and there wasn't a lot to choose from.

This Friday, I'm reading Open Road Summer by Emery Lord. I've had it on my shelves for a while, and I was in the mood for a good contemporary, so I went with this one.

I was pleasantly surprised to find song lyrics on page 56 of this book because I pretty much am obsessed with music and lyrics. I'm including the lyrics along with a short passage from the book.
Oh, you know I'm only human;
I bend and fall and break.
You cut me and I bleed;
I'm a mess for you to make.
So forget the words and give me deeds;

My heart was yours to take.

"'What are you listening to?' she asks when I remove my headphones. She narrows her eyes at me, and I feel as if I've been caught in a personal moment."

This week, I've been reading The List by Siobhan Vivian. It's about eight girls who have either been named the prettiest or ugliest in their high school class. It's definitely not the best book that I've ever read, but it just got a little bit more interesting, so I'm hoping for a strong ending.
"The return to Crestmont Outlets at the end of the summer provided her with a new wardrobe at a low, low size. But deep down Bridget knew this wasn't a good thing. At least that part of herself was still working. She wasn't totally gone."

I'm still slowly recovering from bronchitis and pneumonia, so I haven't really read much in a few weeks, but I'm trying.

This week, I'm slowly making my way through The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey, and while I'm finding some parts interesting, I am feeling undecided about the opening section. I'm hoping it gets better. I saw great reviews before the release, but I'm also starting to see some negative reviews, so I'm a little concerned about this one.

"I understood. In the safe room, a billion upraised faces populating the infinite, and the eyes that sought mine, and the question in those eyes too horrible to put into words, Will I live?  It's all connected. The Others understood that, understood it better than most of us. No hope without faith, no love without trust, no trust without love. Remove one and the entire human house of cards collapses."

So... what have you been reading this week? Feel free to let me know in the comments, or leave a link to your Friday 56 post. I'd love to check them out and possibly add more books to my infinite TBR list.

The Friday 56 is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Freda at Freda's Voice.

The Friday 56 is a really cool book meme. You get to share a little bit of the book you're reading. You can either go to page fifty-six in your physical or e-copy, or you can select a passage from the fifty six percent marker on your e-reader. The only thing you want to watch out for are those spoilers. Try not to give away anything too important. The goal is to make someone curious enough to read the book you're currently reading.

This week, I'm going to post passages from two books that I'm reading, Damsel Distressed by Kelsey Macke and My True Love Gave to Me, a holiday story collection edited by Stephanie Perkins.

Damsel Distressed:

"Brice's arm is looped through Jonathan's as they walk down the aisle. They're completely adorable together. Like, make-me-want-to-barf adorable."

My True Love Gave to Me:

"I broke eye contact and kneeled down to pet Olive. I was so hungry now I constantly felt lightheaded.  My arms and legs felt like styrofoam. I'd finished off the hot dog bun and baby carrots and the yogurts the night before. When I awoke in the morning, I had half of the chocolate bar. I still felt hungry, though, and drank glass after glass of tap water thinking it would fill me up. It didn't work."

So those are my Friday 56 excerpts this week. I hope you enjoyed the little pieces of both of these ARCs.

This Friday, I'm reading Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins. Here's a tidbit of the happenings on page fifty-six.

"And they're off in their own world again. As if they don't see each other enough as it is. He stays in her dorm on weekdays, and she stays in his on weekends. Though I do admit their trade-off is appealing."

Okay... This might spoil a little bit, but I feel like I'm one of the last people to read Lola and the Boy Next Door. It seems like everyone else has already finished the series, and I'm still so behind! Oh well. I'm getting there. I even bought Isla and the Happily Ever After last week, so I'm sure I'll be reading it soon.

The Friday 56 is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Freda at Freda's Voice.

It is quickly becoming one of my favorite memes because I love sharing a little bit of what I read with people. This book meme gives me the chance to share something from the books I'm reading with people other than just my friends.
If you want to participate, all you need to do is link your post to Freda's blog. (She posts a linky when she posts her Friday 56.) Then you open the book closest to you (or the one you're currently reading) to page fifty-six (or 56% on your e-reader). We don't want to give away any major plot details.

This Friday, I'm reading the third book in Marissa Meyers' The Lunar Chronicles series. By now, I'm probably sure that you're sick of seeing stuff from The Lunar Chronicles posted all over my blog. I really haven't had a lot of time to fly through this series like I wanted to, but I'm glad to be reading them for the All About YA group. The books are fun and entertaining. I really feel like Cress might be my favorite once I've finished them. I kind of love "Rapunzel" stories.

"'We've extended an invitation to Her Lunar Majesty to join us via netscreen, but our offer was not accepted.'"
So obviously, this is a spoken line in the book. I don't think it really spoils anything, but it does show us how rude Queen Levana can be. It's not like Emperor Kai is asking her to fly down to Earth for a meeting. It's just a netscreen conversation.
So what is everyone reading this Friday? As always, feel free to let me know in the comments or leave a link to your Friday 56 post.

Have a great weekend, and happy reading!

This Friday, I'm working my way through Scarlet, the second book in The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. So far, I'm really enjoying it. I just wish I had a little more free time to read it.

"She called up the blueprint of the jail's interior structure to check the direction while she waited for Thorne to clamber up behind her. Switching on her built-in flashlight, Cinder started to crawl."

Then you open the book closest to you to page fifty-six (or 56% on your e-reader), and give your readers a little excerpt without spoiling anything. Basically just make your readers want to read the book if they haven't already.

This Friday, I actually have something on page fifty-six! If you read my last post for the meme, you know that my book had a blank page on page fifty-six. Right now, I'm reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I'm almost finished with it, and I really like it so far. I ordered all three books, so I know as soon as I finish it, I'm going to start Scarlet as soon as possible.

Here's a little excerpt from page fifty six:

"But she didn't try to run. No one ever put up a fight when going to the quarantines."
